Spain tops FIFA world rankings; US is No. 24 (AP)

European champion Spain remained No. 1 in FIFA’s rankings Wednesday, followed by Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The United States dropped to No. 24, tops in its regional group. England advanced to No. 10 among the world’s soccer elite, moving up four places. Coach Fabio Capello’s team fell from the top 10 in July after failing to qualify for the European Championship.

Aston Villa Lose but Still Advance

Brad Guzan and Aston Villa lost to Zilina 2-1 on Thursday but the English club but still advanced to the final 32 of the UEFA Cup. Guzan made 3 saves for Villa in the loss.

Up next for Aston Villa is a big matchup with Everton on Sunday in the Premier League.

When I received an email from SoccerPro offering to let Premiership Talk review products for free, I immediately jumped at the offer. One of the first products that I received and used was an Umbro Beanie cap (pictured). Being from the Boston area, and being a football (soccer) player myself, I was glad that I’d have something to keep my head warm in my next match.

Former Tottenham and England midfielder Darren Anderton has decided to retire after Bournemouth’s League Two game against Chester City on Saturday. Sicknote, as he was nicknamed for the numerous injuries that he sustained in his career, is best remembered for the twelve year spell he had at Tottenham Hotspur between 1992 and 2004.

If you’re like me, you’ve been wondering why on-loan winger Fabio Paim hasn’t at least gotten a small look in the first team.

I don’t think we’ll be wondering any longer.
