Oregon tailback LaMichael James, one of the top freshmen in the nation, was arrested on domestic violence charges after his girlfriend said he grabbed her neck during an argument outside his apartment and pushed her to the ground. James, 20, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges of menacing, strangulation and assault.

Stanford is adding two more former NFL assistants to its coaching staff. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday that former Chicago offensive coordinator Ron Turner will be his new quarterbacks and wide receivers coach and former Minnesota assistant Derek Mason will be the defensive backs coach. Harbaugh hired former NFL assistant Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator earlier this month.
One of two men charged with wielding knives in the fight that ended with the fatal stabbing of University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard is free after posting bail. State Department of Correction spokesman Brian Garnett says Hakim Muhammad’s family posted the $450,000 bond on Friday.
Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy says his younger brother made the “perfect decision” to follow in his footsteps with the Longhorns. Case McCoy is one of two standout quarterbacks Texas signed this month in a highly rated recruiting class. He and Connor Wood are already enrolled in class and will participate in spring drills.
Colt McCoy is throwing 40-50 balls a day in an intense rehabilitation program for the injury that knocked him out of the national championship game and hopes to fully participate in the NFL draft combine. Nebraska has added a year to the contract of head coach Bo Pelini and raised his base pay to $2.1 million per year. The deal keeps Pelini at the Huskers’ helm through Feb. 28, 2015. It provides a retention bonus as well: $500,000 if he’s still head coach on Jan. 31, 2015. Also announced on Monday were new contacts for his coaching staff.
Florida redshirt freshman defensive tackle Gary Brown is accused of misdemeanor battery in a dispute at a party near Gainesville. Brown was charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery Sunday morning. Jail records indicated that bond had not yet been set for the 19-year-old, but he was expected to appear before a judge Monday.
Florida has hired Arizona Cardinals defensive backs coach Teryl Austin as its defensive coordinator. Austin comes to the Gators with 19 years of coaching experience, including 12 at the college level and the past seven as an NFL assistant. He spent the last three years with the Cardinals, and the previous four with the Seattle Seahawks.
